Southern Health NHS Foundation Trust provides Community Health, mental health and learning disability services for people across Hampshire. It is one of the largest providers of these kinds of services in the UK. The Trust employs around 6,000 staff who work across over 200 sites serving a population of around 1.3 million people.

Following on from our Rapid Process Improvement Workshop in May 2019, Southern Health has committed to developing our Volunteer opportunities within the Trust with the launch of our new #VolunteersRvalued (VRV) initiative.

  • Provide social support to patients on a day to day basis e.g. engage them in conversations and provide attention to patients when the ward is under pressure.            
  •   Take lead and show new volunteers around the ward so they are familiar with the setting.

No. Many of our volunteers aren’t current patients/service user.

In general, you would need to be over 18 to volunteer with Southern Health so you can make a useful and safe contribution.

We cannot always provide supervision so this may restrict younger people from volunteering.

Yes - but you must tell your Job Centre about your volunteering.  

In general, there is no minimum time you must give you can discuss with us what arrangement works for you and the role you are applying for

As a volunteer you will not be paid. We will however ensure you don’t lose out financially through volunteering so will cover agreed expenses, such as travel.

Yes, we have a full induction and training process. You will receive a thorough induction to your specific role so that you are confident in what we are asking you to do.

Yes, you will have access to Southern Health training, these opportunities can be discussed with your manager.

Yes, you will receive ongoing support in your role. You will have a named supervisor and additional support from colleagues.

We are developing processes and pathways to ensure career development is an integral part of the volunteer experience.

All staff receive a weekly bulletin (email) with updates on news and opportunities across the Trust. We are in the process of developing volunteer networks within the trust.

Southern Health recognises staff achievement at our STAR Awards. 

Yes, volunteers at Southern Health have the same cover as paid staff, as long as they are carrying out the duties in their role description and a risk assessment for that role has been carried out.
