About the service

The Orthotics Department is situated in the South block of St Mary’s Hospital and runs mainly outpatient clinics. The department is responsible for the issue of orthoses (appliances, splints) such as spinal supports, insoles, shoe adaptions, leg braces, orthopaedic footwear and wigs.

The Prosthetics Service provides external prosthetic devices (upper and lower limbs) to amputees and limb deficient people who live and work within our catchment area.

The aim of the services is to meet the individual needs of our patients, to allow them to return to their pre-morbid activities (wherever possible), or achieve the best outcome for their condition. This could be enabling a return to a sport like golf, running or swimming. The service also provides repairs and maintenance of the prosthesis.

What we do

The orthotics team is responsible for the issue of orthoses (appliances, splints) such as spinal supports, insoles, shoe adaptions, leg braces, orthopaedic footwear and wigs.

The prosthetics service provides external prosthetic devices for both upper and lower limbs, to amputees and limb deficient people.

Accessing the service

Orthotics department
Your Consultant, Doctor or Healthcare Professional will refer you to the department to be assessed for an orthosis that should improve your mobility or reduce pain levels.

Prosthetics service
The prosthetics service accept referrals from health care professionals for new patients. Amputees and limb deficient patients are 'patients for life', therefore it is extremely important that they receive continuity of care from their local Prosthetic Centre - established patients can refer themselves back into the service at any time.
