In total, more than 650 nominations were received from our staff, patients, families, and members of the public. Details of all Winners

Working in Partnership Award

The ‘Working in Partnership’ Award is based on one of our Trust values and is for an admin, clinical or non-clinical team or individual that provides the best possible service by breaking down barriers and working in partnership with other teams, organisations, or patients. It might also include research – where we have worked in partnership with other organisations to develop our healthcare knowledge and research capabilities.

Winner: Alpa Raja, Service Development Lead for the Memory Assessment and Research Centre (MARC)

"Alpa has raised the profile of the Memory Assessment and Research Centre (MARC) within the Trust and local dementia charities but also within under-served communities in and around Southampton. Alpa has led the under-served communities project which asks what we can do to break down barriers for people to take part in dementia research so that we can be inclusive and offer this opportunity to all. Alpa has also set up the Friends of MARC group consisting of people with dementia and their families to ensure that we are providing the best service to all. Alpa is professional, knowledgeable and very approachable and is a real asset to the department."

Respect and Inclusion Award

This award is for an individual or team that promotes equality, diversity and inclusion for colleagues, patients, and the local community. Their work is underpinned by the respect they hold for the people they support, their families and their colleagues.

Winner: Elsie Chizana, Nurse Team Lead from Hazel Ward, Parklands Hospital, Basingstoke.

"Hazel Ward PICU were experiencing a consistently high rate of hate crime incidents (racial abuse). Elsie Chizana stood bravely to create a change in culture on the ward. We used to think comments like 'they are unwell they don't mean it' was helpful or felt we didn't have the education or the words to be able to offer support so we stayed quiet, not realising this was part of the problem. Elsie created a 'Safe Space' for everyone to learn from each other, ask questions and make mistakes. This has allowed for open sharing, open receiving, mutual understanding, acknowledgement and then, if appropriate, shared problem-solving. It has also enabled people to be heard, validated and feel safe to respectfully express their experiences.  We are not expecting the gold standard, and we are not expecting it to no longer happen, but she has worked so hard to improve the support, the culture, and the understanding that staff DO NOT come to work to be racially abused, making Hazel Ward that much of a better place to be."

This is a person who positively mentors and develops individuals to be the best they can be.

Winner: Matt Burdock, Principle Clinical Psychologist, Leigh House General Adolescent Unit, Winchester

"Matt has embraced the development and support of practitioners to a brand-new role of Youth Intensive Psychological Practitioner (YIPP). YIPPs work with young people across inpatient and intensive home treatment teams, including having the flexibility to follow young people as they navigate their care. He has provided weekly supervision, case management, skills development and training and allowed extensive shadowing opportunities. Matt has inspired and supported the two practitioners in these pioneering roles.

This is what they have said about the support he has provided to their development: 'Matt has been unswerving in his commitment to my clinical training and skills development.  His supportive, non-judgmental and reflective approach has allowed me to grow and learn as a practitioner.”

Winner: Stephanie Llewellyn and Rachael Smart, the Willow Group, Gosport

"The Willow Garden is an exciting project, which is currently seeing an under-utilised area of grass, in the grounds of Forton Medical Centre, transform into a community garden. It will be both a formal growing and sensory garden and an informal relaxation and nature garden.

Steph and Rachael have been the pinnacle in developing the garden from the start of the project, often in their own time. As well as tending to the garden itself, they have also liaised with local businesses and contacts to secure donations and sponsorships, to make this project possible. Recently, they took an enquiry from a 97 year young lady who is keen to come and volunteer in the garden, making the age range of our 26 volunteers from 16 to 97 - just shows the power of gardening and the love of outdoors!"

    • Rebecca Salveston, Community Nurse from Children’s and Families services
    • Greg Parr, Administrator for the Assertive Outreach and Homeless Health Care Team, Southampton.

Winner: Ellie Hickman, Mother and Baby Unit, Melbury Lodge, Winchester

She has collated a year's worth of data and shared this with the service. This data shows significant improvements in mother-infant relationship, maternal functioning and wellbeing. This feedback has boosted staff morale and had a positive impact on staff confidence to continue to develop excellent care as well as the extensive range of interventions offered on the ward. Ellie has gone over and above her role to enhance and improve the professional standards of the MBU.

Winner: Tracey Hollis, Senior Support Worker, Hazel Ward, Parklands Hospital, Basingstoke

Tracey is the physical embodiment of one of our core Trust values. People first. Although I would go further…not only does Tracey keep the people who we care for at the centre of all the work she does - she values everybody. Tracey advocates for our patients like no other. Fearlessly and tirelessly making sure that we deliver a high level of care. Never afraid to challenge behaviours that fall short of this ideal. Taking new members of staff under her wing, sharing with them the Hazel Ward ethos which has led to us being recognised (not for the first time either) as champions of least restrictive care - having the lowest level of seclusions in our area. Team of the Year Award

Staff on Lyndhurst ward helped to support a long-term forensic mental health patient through his end-of-life pathway. The patient requested to remain in the ward as it was his home. They worked collaboratively with him to make his time at the end of his life the best it could be and ensured that all his wishes were met.
