Parkinson's Disease Specialist Nursing

Parkinson’s disease is a neurological condition that is caused by the loss of a chemical messenger, called dopamine, in the brain.

The loss of dopamine can cause symptoms such as slow, stiff movements and tremor. Some people can also experience symptoms that aren't connected to your movement such as anxiety, depression and pain.

How we can help

Parkinson’s disease Nurse Specialists have advanced specialist training and experience in helping you manage your individual symptoms. We support you to continue doing the things that are important to you.

Some of the other ways we can help include:

  • Helping you, and those close to you, to understand your condition from the time you're diagnosed and as you continue to manage your condition.

  • Provide advice and information on maintaining and improving the control of your symptoms. We want you to feel informed when making decisions on the different treatment options that may be available to you.

  • Regularly reviewing your symptoms and prescribing medication when necessary, as well as referring you to other health professionals such as the physiotherapists and occupational therapists for further assessment if you.
  • Provide information and guidance on work related issues, access to social support and planning for the future.

  • Support and inform other health professionals and social work colleagues so they have a greater understanding of the individual impact of Parkinson’s disease.

  • We are part of a nationwide network of Parkinson's Disease specialists who share information. This enables us to provide you with up-to-date advice on managing your condition.
