This study will explore the psychological and social impact of having diabetes alongside a mental illness, and the experience of diabetes healthcare. The aim is to increase understanding of how to improve diabetes care for people living with both of these conditions.

What is involved?

Both eligible patients and their carers will be invited to take part in a questionnaire that will last approx. 1 hour.   


To take part in this study you must meet the following criteria:

  • Aged 18 years or over

  • Diagnosed with a severe mental illness (diagnosis of schizophrenia, schizoaffective disorder, bipolar disorder and manic episodes, and non-organic psychoses)

  • Diagnosis of diabetes at least 1 year ago, including Type 1 and Type 2 but excluding women with diabetes only diagnosed in pregnancy

Unfortunately, you cannot take part if you are:

  • A patient living in acute inpatient units

  • A carer with a diagnosis of diabetes

  • OR a carer under the age of 18
