Individual Placement and Support Team (IPS)

About the service

The Individual Placement and Support team (IPS) support people with the employment part of their recovery. The team are fully integrated within Southampton’s Community Mental Health Teams, Early Intervention in Psychosis (EIP) team as well as the Hampshire's Specialist Community Forensic Team.

What we do

The team have supported over 300 people to find paid employment in a number of roles including; Sales Consultant, Bakery Assistant, PA and Marketing Assistant, Production Assistant and even provided support for ongoing business ventures. 

IPS aims to work quickly to help people who use the service gain sustainable employment matching their job goals and preferences. They work intensively with small caseloads and support is available to everyone who expresses an interest in paid employment. Following a job start, the team offer ongoing support to help settle the person into employment for as long as they need it whilst receiving support from the mental health team.

Support includes: 

  • exploring job options
  • help with creating or updating CVs
  • job searching 
  • engaging with employers to discuss job opportunities 
  • ongoing support once in work
  • support to retain employment.

Accessing the service

Each Employment Specialist takes referrals directly from health practitioners and you must be under the care of Southampton’s Community Mental Health Teams, Early Intervention in Psychosis (EIP) team or the Specialist Community Forensic Team. Please talk to your health care professional about this service.
