Southern Health welcomes new Medical Director with track record of transforming services and involving patients

6 April 2018

Southern Health NHS Foundation Trust has appointed experienced psychiatrist Dr Karl Marlowe as Medical Director. Dr Marlowe was previously Clinical Director at East London NHS Foundation Trust, which is rated outstanding by the Care Quality Commission. Karl takes up his new role on Monday 9 April.

Karl was successfully appointed following a rigorous selection process which involved service users, carers, staff and the regulator NHS Improvement.

Dr Nick Broughton, Chief Executive of Southern Health said:

“I am delighted to welcome Karl as substantive medical director. We were impressed with Karl’s track record of working in partnership with service users and carers, and transforming mental health services so more people receive care closer to home. These are key priorities for Southern Health, so I’ve no doubt Karl’s experience will make a real difference for Hampshire patients.”

Dr Karl Marlowe, incoming Medical Director at Southern Health said:

“I am thrilled with this appointment and very much looking forward to joining the team at Southern Health. The trust has faced significant challenges in recent years but is clearly on a path of improvement and has areas of outstanding care.  This is an exciting time to join the trust and I am eager to start contributing as part of a strong clinical leadership team.”

This is the latest in a series of recent appointments to the trust board. It continues the trust’s commitment to strong clinical and operational leadership in order to improve quality and enable staff to deliver the best possible care.
