Child Safety Week 2017

Child Safety Week is a national awareness campaign designed to help equip families with important information about keeping children safe and preventing accidents. This year the campaign takes place on 5 - 11 June 2017

Health Visitors from Southern Health NHS Foundation Trust, in partnership with The Child Accident Prevention Trust (CAPT) are this year focusing on raising awareness of the dangers associated with button batteries.

We are extremely grateful to have worked with the family of Francesca Asan, a two year old girl who tragically died in May 2016 after swallowed a button battery. In the video above, George Asan, Francesca’s father, tells his story.

Francesca's family were unaware Francesca had swallowed a battery and although they sought medical advice for her tiredness, loss of appetite and pain, the real cause of her symptoms were hidden from sight. Button batteries not only pose a choking hazard to children and infants, but they can also become lodged in the throat or stomach causing a caustic soda reaction which burns the surrounding tissues. This can lead to serious internal bleeding and death within as little as two hours.

George Asan describes how button batteries should be stored well out of reach and sight and said:

"What happened to Francesca must not happen to other children. This is why I am sharing my story so other parents can keep their children safe."

We would like to extend our gratitude to George, for sharing Francesca's story.
