  Richard's story

I am trained in woodwork by trade but decided to become a postman. However, this didn’t offer me a huge amount of flexibility and with family commitments I started looking for a new career opportunity.

A family member suggested Broadmoor Hospital. Whilst I knew this would be a challenge it sounded like a great chance to develop and from there I began my training as a nurse specialist. This led to various clinical and eventually managerial roles within the NHS, varying from Surrey and Borders and finally onto Southern Health as Head of Nursing in the North.

Southern Health has been challenging over the years, both on the front line and within senior management. However I truly believe that we are transforming and that our goal is all about striving towards better outcomes and care for patients across the Trust.

Developing staff is a real interest of mine and one of the reasons that I love my job.

In my position I am able to ensure that the level of care provided is of a standard that I would be happy for my son or daughter to receive. Ultimately, I am here in this role because I want to make a difference. Making a difference to people’s lives and seeing them recover is what the NHS is all about.
