I am a Psychiatry Trainee, and am currently completing a Quality Improvement Fellowship with the Wessex School of QI.
This has given me the opportunity to spend time looking at an area that is important across the services that the trust delivers – support and involvement of carers (family and friends) of our service users. Whilst someone is under the care of the Mental Health Services, it can be a difficult and distressing time for both the individual and those who are close to them at home. By focusing on the way in which we communicate with and support carers, we should be able to help them in turn support their family member, and also reduce the risk of them developing their own mental health problems as a result of carer stress.
The Carers Trust’s Triangle of Care provides guidance on this. I am interested in looking at how their recommendations can be helpful to us, and get suggestions from local carers, staff and service users on how we can implement the ideas in our daily practice.
If you are interested in hearing more about the project or fellowship, or want to get involved, please contact me at email@example.com – it would be great to hear from you!
Rachel has just recorded a podcast with us telling us all about her QI fellow and the carers engagement project she has completed with the adult mental health teams.
