People experiencing a mental health crisis in Southampton now have access to a brand new service in the heart of the city: the Lighthouse.
The Lighthouse is a safe, non-judgemental space, staffed by Mental Health Professionals and Peer Specialists, who themselves have lived experience of mental health difficulties which they can draw upon to help others. The Lighthouse is a relaxing and informal environment, facilitating reflection, hope, resilience and support, preventing a crisis escalating to an emergency.

Representing an investment of almost £400,000 from local commissioners, the service is run in partnership between Southern Health NHS Foundation Trust and Solent Mind. The Lighthouse is designed to provide a vital extra layer of support to people most in need, complementing existing community and hospital care in the city.
The Lighthouse is based in Shirley, with good access for people from across Southampton. The service runs from 4.00pm until midnight, seven days a week, 365 days a year. It is open to anyone over the age of 18 who feels they are at crisis point with their mental health.
People visiting the Lighthouse will be able to take part in creative activities, spend time in a calming sensory room, have a chat with staff or simply have a cup of tea and take some time out.
Dr Nick Broughton, Chief Executive of Southern Health NHS Foundation Trust said: “Often in a crisis, what you really need is a safe and calming space, supported by friendly experts who understand what you are going through. This is exactly what the Lighthouse aims to provide and I’m delighted that we can now offer this to people in Southampton.”
Dr Hana Burgess, GP Board member for NHS Southampton City CCG, said: “The launch of The Lighthouse is positive step forward in support for people with mental health difficulties in Southampton. The mix of support from professionals and people with lived experience makes this service unique in our area. Many adults in Southampton have a severe and enduring mental health condition, which is why this is such a big priority in the city’s new five year health and care strategy, which will be launched shortly.”
