Local NHS Trust delivers to those in need

December 2020

Southern Health NHS Foundation Trust have been donating surplus meals to various charities and foodbanks across Hampshire.

At the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, Southern Health purchased a stock of food for their front-line staff working on wards so they could access a hot meal quickly during peak times. The meals were originally produced for the airline industry, but were made available due to the huge reduction in business due to COVID-19.

Almost 90,000 meals were distributed to front line staff since March, accounting for 90% of the total stock. More than 200,000 meals and food items have been delivered and continue to be consumed, which staff have said has made such a huge difference in such challenging times. The remaining hot meals are being donated to local charities and foodbanks across the county.

Stella Gardener, Catering Services Manager at the Trust commented, “The COVID-19 pandemic has impacted everyone across the country in some way, but for those who are already struggling, it has been devastating. We have seen so many communities coming together and supporting each other and we are delighted that the surplus of food will be going to places that need it most.”

Food packages and other items have been delivered to 13 different foodbanks across Hampshire, including The Big Difference in Southampton.

Head of The Big Difference, Sanjay Mall added, “We would like to share our huge thanks to Southern Health and all those who have supported ours and other foodbanks during this difficult time. I am overwhelmed with the generosity of the donors who have been quick to respond and help those who are suffering under the strain of these new current conditions.

“The reality is that we don’t actually realise the extent of the damage that has been caused to those who were already struggling. I do feel that community spirit is high and there are many of us who care about the people in our cities and towns and are doing our best to give people hope and actually show them real love.”

“Many families rely on charities and foodbanks, especially during this time of year. We are always looking for volunteers with a few spare hours if anyone would like to help us support those in need.”
