Public Governors provide a vital link between the public and the Trust Board, ensuring that the ideas, feedback and concerns of local people are listened to and taken forward. Southern Health currently has X public governors that work across Hampshire. Their role is key in ensuring the Trust makes continuous improvement and meets the needs of the people that use local services. Governors work closely with the wider Trust Board to develop strategic plans and gain an insight into the Trust’s challenges and achievements.

Lynne Hunt, Trust Chair, works closely with all governors and understands the importance of their role within Southern Health and the difference they make to local health services.

Lynne explains, “Our Governors have such an important role within our organisation as they provide a unique perspective and work closely with local communities, colleagues and the people who use our services. They are the voice of the people.

Governors share the views of local people they represent and ensure we hear any concerns or suggestions to improve local health care. I encourage anyone passionate about their local health services to become a Governor and be the positive change within our National Health Service.”

Andrew Jackman is Lead Governor for Southern Health and has a particular interest in mental health services. He added “Staff governors, appointed governors and public governors have contributed to the real improvement seen in the last couple of years in many different ways.We are given almost unprecedented access to the Trust and get involved in visiting hospitals and clinics, attending Board committee meetings and hiring non-executive directors.”

Southern Health currently has 10 public governors, 3 staff governors and 4 appointed governors. Adrian Thorne, Appointed Governor for Carers Together, has worked in the public sector most of his career and saw an opportunity to use his experience to improve health care across Hampshire.

He commented “The beauty of becoming a Governor is that you can follow up on your particular areas of interest, as well as being part of a team who can be a critic friend for the Trust. We understand we still have improvements to make, which is why we need fresh perspectives to help us continue the journey.”
