Today the Care Quality Commission (CQC) has published their report into Southern Health NHS Foundation Trust and awarded the Trust an improved overall rating of ‘Good’.

The ‘Good’ rating demonstrates the significant progress made at the Trust and the level of care  provided by the staff at Southern Health and their commitment to provide the best possible services to our patients, services users and their families.

The report shows that over 90% of Trust services are now rated as good or outstanding, reflecting the continued progress in improving services and care.

Dr Nick Broughton, Chief Executive of Southern Health said: “I am very encouraged by the report published today.  It reflects the significant strides we have made to improve the quality and safety of all services. It also highlights how hard we have worked to ensure we better involve families and carers in the care of our patients and service users.”

“I am incredibly proud of our staff and pleased they have been recognised for their absolute commitment and dedication to deliver the best possible care to those who use our services.”
The well-led inspection which focused on the leadership throughout Southern Health, also received a ‘good’ rating and demonstrates the quality of leadership across the Trust. Inspectors said: “The leadership team had taken significant steps to improve the culture across the Trust and this was paying dividends. Staff across the Trust felt valued but there was a real focus on doing what was best for people, both staff, patients and carers and a real commitment to the delivery of good quality patient care at every level. Staff at all levels of the trust were proud to work there and morale amongst staff was good.”

Nick added: “The report has given us a valuable insight into the areas where we still must improve to ensure 100% of our services receive a good rating. This latest inspection is the next step towards Southern Health becoming an outstanding Trust. We will continue to strive to be the best and to provide world class services to the people we care for.”

“We are clear that making Southern Health into the best organisation it can be is a collaborative effort, that must be driven by those who deliver and receive our services on a day to day basis.”

Notes to editors:

The inspection took place in October 2019 and included a well-led inspection (focused on the Trust’s leadership) and covered four key service areas:

  • Acute wards for Adult Mental Health and Psychiatric Intensive Care Units (PICUs)
  • Child and Adolescent Mental Health (CAMHs)  inpatient services
  • Older People Mental Health wards (OPMH)
  • Mental health crisis services and places of safety.
