What does a Governor do?
Governors are members of the Council of Governors and they provide a vital link between the public and the Trust.  They help communicate the ideas, feedback and concerns of local people. Their role is to raise concerns and ask questions on behalf of people living in the constituencies they represent, to support our service users, and their families and carers, and help shape the way the Trust provides its services.

Why should I become a Public or Staff Governor?
Being a Public Governor can be a rewarding role that enables you to be at the heart of the NHS in your community and make a real difference to service users. Existing Governors have played a strong role on Trust developments in recent years, sitting in on interview panels for new Board members, having a say in how we provide our services, being involved in programmes of work that directly affect frontline services and attending public events that promote the work of the Trust.

They not only help us make strategic decisions about our services but, most importantly, they are the voice of the public, patients and their families and carers; helping to share views and ask vital questions on behalf of the people of Hampshire. So if you have a passion for healthcare and want to make a huge difference, I encourage you to become a Public Governor.”
Lynne Hunt, Chair, Southern Health NHS Foundation Trust

“Governors play a key role in making sure our patients and carers voices are heard and they are aadrian thorne.jpg critical friend to the Trust. For our Council of Governors to be most effective, we need individuals with all sorts of backgrounds, interests and skills to join the Council to fully represent our communities across the county. ‚ÄčI truly believe that Governors can make more of a positive impact in representing our public and influencing the services provided so they can become the best they can be. If you want to make a difference to healthcare in your local area, then please join us!”
Adrian Thorne, Lead Governor, Southern Health NHS Foundation Trust

Sarah Reed.jpg"I applied to become a staff governor because I recognise the enormous contribution our staff make to delivering excellent patient centred care. I enjoy getting to know more about the Trust, and the people behind the services. I want to help and support people to be their very best. I want to know what is important to our staff so I can help make sure that our Trust supports them to be able to do their jobs, keep them safe and look after their health and wellbeing.

If you are inquisitive, have good connections within the trust and can convey opinions in a constructive manner, then the governors need you.  We are looking for two more staff governors to join us for the North and South East Hampshire areas. Happy to talk to anyone who wants to find out more.”
Sarah Reed, Staff Governor
