Parents and carers

School Nurses offer confidential advice and support to children, young people and their parent/ carers.

Family life
  • School Nurses are qualified nurses who have a specialist qualification in children and young people's public health
  • We work closely with other health professionals and with schools to make sure that your child's physical and emotional health needs are met

  • We offer health reviews and immunisations in line with the Healthy Child Programme 5-19 including a School entry health review when children first start school, immunisations at various points, and the National Child Measurement Programme in Year R and Year 6

  • We are able to offer information and advice to help you and your family stay healthy

  • School Nurses are skilled at spotting health problems or concerns early so that we can provide early support

  • We work with local communities, schools, families, and individual children and young people.

  • We work with other agencies to make sure that every child and young person is able to live and go to school in a safe environment

  • School Nurses are able to offer health reviews and support to children and young people who are home educated and at college.


Should my child go to school today?

School Nurses are able to give advice on when it's safe for your child to go to school, as well as information on managing childhood illnesses and conditions including headlice and threadworm. The NHS 111 service is able to offer confidential health advice 24 hours a day and 365 days of the year. It is free to call 111 from a landline or mobile phone.


How can you access the School Nursing service?

Our webpages provide health information and links to websites that we feel may be helpful to you and your family. If you would like support from a School Nurse please contact your local School Nurse team. Alternatively your GP, School or other professional can request support from the School Nurse team by completing a request for support form.
