‘The Practice' first opened in 2015 as a pilot scheme, funded through the Prime Minister’s Challenge Fund, and involved seven GP practices working together to open an extra ‘branch’, giving over 70,000 patients additional choice and access to care, seven days a week, at evenings and weekends. West Hampshire CCG will now continue to fund The Practice and its focus on improving access to appointments outside of normal working hours.
Gethin Hughes, Director Integrated Services, Southern Health NHS Foundation Trust, says,
“In partnership with our colleagues in primary care, Southern Health is delighted to be the new provider of The Practice. We recognise the importance of making health services available at evenings and weekends and that’s why we’ve already moved to seven-day services at Lymington Hospital. We are also keen to explore how we can bring together services in Lymington Hospital with those of The Practice to ensure local people can access the most appropriate service for their needs.
Taking on The Practice means we will continue working closely with local GPs and health professionals to deliver this much valued service to people in the New Forest”
The Practice will still remain open seven days a week and will continue to offer access to both routine and same day primary care appointments to the patients registered to the following seven practices in the New Forest:
- New Milton Health Centre
- Arnewood Surgery
- Lyndhurst Surgery
- Barton and Webb-Peploe Surgery
- Milford and Wisteria Surgery
- Chawton House Surgery
- New Forest Central Medical Group (Brockenhurst Surgery and Sway Surgery
Changes to opening times
Following the pilot scheme, West Hampshire CCG has changed the current opening hours (8.00am to 8.00pm seven days a week) and from 1 February 2017 will be offering appointments for four hours every weekday evening (4.00pm to 8.00pm), eight hours on Saturdays (10.00am to 6.00pm) and four hours on Sundays (10.00am to 2.00pm).
This change in opening hours is to focus on providing services at evenings and weekends. Following pilots similar to The Practice across the country, national guidance recommends that these are the times when improved access is most valuable to patients and the funding has changed to reflect this.
It is important to remember that these operating hours at The Practice are in addition to the regular services already being provided at the seven participating GP surgeries (listed above)
Patients registered with the seven West new Forest practices can access ‘The Practice’ via their own GP practice or by contacting ‘The Practice’ directly on 01590 630 545.
