Southern Health NHS Foundation Trust, together with Trust charity brighterway, is helping the elderly stay warm and well this winter by collecting donations from across the New Forest to make up Winter Survival baskets for some of the area’s most isolated and frail people.
Supporting the national Stay Well This Winter campaign, Southern Health is encouraging people to ‘stock up’ in case of bad weather. This means ensuring someone has enough food, drink and any prescription medications to last them through bad weather and holiday closures.
However, there are people who struggle to make sure they have enough. This is why Southern Health and its community teams in the New Forest want to help by collecting unperishable food items such as tins of food and soups, as well as tea, coffee, blankets, gloves and anything else that can be spared to help someone through the winter.
Alison Collins, a Healthcare Support Worker based at the Becton Centre in Barton-On-Sea created her own gift boxes for some of her patients after realising they would be alone over Christmas: “Last year I was chatting to a few of my patients and they said they were going to be alone over the festive period. I felt terrible and wanted to do something to help so I put together little gift boxes with bread and cheese and ham, shower gel, mince pies and a few other things to let them know that someone was thinking about them.
“Hopefully with the help of the Forest and its community spirit we will be able to reach more people and ensure that they stay safe and warm at home, as well as letting them know there are people out there that haven’t forgotten about them.”
