1 in 5 women suffer mental illness during pregnancy

A Southern Health perinatal psychiatrist has revealed that 20% of women will suffer from some sort of mental illness either during the course of pregnancy or soon after giving birth.

Dr. Alain Gregoire was one of the speakers at a Perinatal Mental Health Conference in Basingstoke on Friday 13 February 2015. The event was organised by both Southern Health and Hampshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust and it brought together health professionals from across the country.

Women and families across Hampshire are fortunate to be able to access treatment that meets nationally agreed standards. According to the Maternal Mental Health Alliance, almost half of the UK does not have specialist perinatal mental health services.

Southern Health’s community services are available to women preconceptually, antenatally and postnatally up to baby’s first birthday. There is also Melbury Lodge, which is an inpatient unit in Winchester, where mothers and babies can receive professional care from a specialist team 24/7 until they're well enough to be at home.
